How many sleeps until Christmas? That is the question on the lips of many children and a fun way to answer this question is by displaying a vibrant, festive Christmas countdown. There are so many possibilities when it comes to creating a Christmas countdown, – you could make it as simple as you like, messy or mess free, small or large (we’ve got you covered as we’ll be sharing examples for each of these).
It’s become a tradition (and boy do we love traditions) in our home to make a Christmas countdown so let’s take a look at one we made a couple of years ago.
- – Pre cut star shapes from local craft shop
- Sponge Brushes
- Bubble wrap (wrapped around cardboard tube)
- Foam stickers
This countdown was all about experimenting with different painting techniques, here are a few we attempted:
We used the outer decorative edge of a paper doily as a stencil to make intricate patterns on some of the stars.
Festive foam stickers placed in the middle of stars served as a perfect way to practice some basic resist painting. Once the paint was dabbed over the sticker and the surrounding area, the foam piece was removed.
Some bubble wrap secured to a cardboard tube acted as a roller stamp (my little girl who was eight months at the time was having her own sensory experience in her high chair – finger painting with yogurt – her preferred canvas was her body)
Here’s a closer look at some of the completed stars:
The final result was a Christmas countdown that we displayed in our entry way. Next to each star I placed a numbered card (Christmas gift tags) to countdown the number of days until Christmas.
